Episode 134: The Kevin Test

First Keith talks about how things went in the first session of his new D&D campaign, and about a D&D event he just returned from called Level Eater 8. Keith mentions a couple who went looking for a dog they could call Kevin. Andy mourns the passing of Joe Frank, recommends a book by Roz Chast called Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, and asks if Keith has thought about going to Burning Man. Keith tells a morbid story, then they get into a big discussion about Star Trek Discovery, including some minor spoilers. Behind the spoiler curtain they also discuss The Good Place, Electric Dreams, and Black Mirror.

First Keith talks about a new D&D campaign he’s starting up, which he’s going to be running “sandbox-style,” and Andy mentions At Your Service, a book of sandbox-style adventures Keith wrote for the Over The Edge RPG system. Andy talks about sending Get the MacGuffin and Anatomy Fluxx off to the printer, and Keith talks about the Action Cats! expansion for which Andy submitted a new photo. Then Andy follows-up on the story he told last week about a mysterious cat that showed up on his doorstep. Andy also announces the pending release of Russian Star Wars Fluxx. This inevitably leads to another round of Star Wars discussions, followed by some talk about Star Trek, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, 24, and the endings of TV series in general. Lastly, behind the spoiler curtain, they discuss several episodes of Electric Dreams.

The guys talk about being sat upon by their pets, then they get into a discussion of the finer details of Doctor Who’s regeneration process. This leads into a discussion about Andy’s idea for a Star Trek series about the DS-9 character, Dax. Keith talks about watching Legion again, then he talks about the first couple of episodes of Electric Dreams. Keith talks about a new RPG scenario he’s been working on. This leads into discussions of various big gaming conventions, a new role-playing campaign Keith is running, and the status of Illimat. Moving on to media topics, Keith talks about Riverdale, then they get into a long discussion about Star Trek and the new Discovery series. Also discussed are bats that can walk through walls, the gallery of Russian space dogs, and a Tiki lounge in Vegas. Keith reports on the status of Action Cats! and Andy talks about receiving the first production samples of Doctor Who Fluxx and Zendo. Moving on to media, Keith talks spoiler-free about Blade Runner, since Andy hasn’t seen it yet, and Andy talks spoiler-free about Star Trek: Discovery, since Keith hasn’t seen it. First Keith’s talks about the joys of finally being home after almost two months on the road. Then they talk about The Tick, Star Trek: Discovery, and The Orville, trying not to be too spoilery as they comparing all three to the shows that came before them. Keith talks about a game he recently got into called Onitama, and compares it to Andy’s game Martian Chess. This leads to a discussion of tactical vs strategic elements, and come-from-behind-victories, in their game designs. Then they bring down the spoiler curtain for a discussion of the first couple of episodes of the second season of The Good Place. Lastly, they talk about things they haven’t been watching, because there are just too many shows.

First Keith’s talks about the final stages of the epic 7 week road trip he’s been on. Topics include Wall Drug, the SPAM Museum, a game cafe in Massachusetts called the Castle, the 50K Silver Dollar Diner, and the giant statue of the Jolly Green Giant. Keith also reports on how they enjoyed the box of cassette tapes Andy loaned them, along with other tapes friends had given them for the drive. Keith talks vaguely about a new game he got to try out that he found very intriguing, and Andy talks about a nerdy mistake in the cover art for Doctor Who Fluxx which they managed to get fixed JUST in time. Then they lower the spoiler curtain to discuss the most recent episodes of Rick & Morty. Andy also gives a few spoiler-free thoughts on Star Trek Discovery.

Keith talks about a new board game called Potion Explosion, which leads to a discussion of the vintage 3DO videogame called Trip’D.
